Snow Joke
28/10/2005
Over 1.2 million* British winter sports enthusiasts will be waxing their skis and clicking into their bindings in search of some action in the snow this winter. And with snowboarding becoming increasingly popular, Churchill Insurance is warning participants of the potential dangers.
Research** shows that snowboarders are still twice as likely as skiers to sustain serious injuries on the slopes. The street-style clothing favoured by many snowboarders means they are less protected from falls than skiers from injuries and are also more likely to suffer from ailments such as hypothermia and sunburn.
Churchill’s own claims data*** shows that a third of winter sports travel claims are made by snowboarders and the injuries they sustain are very different to those of skiers. For example, one in five snowboarding injuries affects wrists, which are particularly vulnerable. With the average winter sports travel claim worth £362, Churchill advises all snowboarders, from beginners to experts, to make sure they are fully covered when it comes to insurance this year.

- Broken/fractured wrists
- Broken thumbs
- Dislocated/broken shoulder
- Broken arms/legs
- 5. Head injuries
While skiing remains the UK's most popular snow sport, snowboarding's appeal continues to grow among the younger generations, with 41 percent of snowboarders aged under 25****. Many of those who first pioneered snowboarding in the '80s are now introducing their families to the sport and consequently it is becoming increasingly mainstream.
For those intent on thrill-seeking, snowblading is another emerging snow sport. Metre long 'skis' are used without poles, enabling snowbladers to go much faster and take greater risks. Indeed, the variety of new winter sports is growing and adequate cover is paramount. If you are unsure whether your winter sports activity is covered, you should contact your insurer to find out.
Mike Ketteringham, Head of Churchill Travel Insurance, said: "With snowboarding becoming increasingly mainstream but no less dangerous, it's important for boarders to make sure they take winter sports cover in addition to their travel insurance. If not, they may have to deal with some unpleasant surprises while on holiday when they really should be busy enjoying themselves."
