Is your cheap car insurance good enough?
If you’ve shopped around for car insurance recently, you’ll no doubt have found a cheap quote – but does it give you the level of cover you need?
It might look like a great deal, but the cheapest car insurance quote isn’t always the best option.
Whatever policy you take out, it’s a good idea to make sure you have enough cover so you won’t be left out of pocket when you need to make a claim.
Here are a few ways to cut the price of your insurance without compromising your cover.
1. Get a quote online
It’s often cheaper to buy online because you’ll be going directly to the insurer and the costs are lower with almost no paperwork and fewer staff handling the application.
2. Check the excess
When you take out a car insurance policy you’ll normally have an excess – an amount you’ll need to contribute to the cost of any claim.
So if your excess is £100 and you make a claim for £400 worth of repairs, your insurer will only pay out £300.
By contributing to the cost of any claims, you can reduce the price of your car insurance premiums.
Most insurers allow you to set a voluntary excess on top of whatever compulsory one they charge, so you can bring your premiums down.
Remember, by agreeing to a higher excess you’ll be liable to pay more towards any repairs so if you think you’ll make claims often you could be better off paying a higher premium and having a lower excess.
3. Get a discount when you buy more than one type of insurance
If your insurance company offers more than just car insurance, they may offer a discount if you take out more than one policy.
It’s a way of rewarding people for sticking with their insurer.
4. Named drivers
The cost of insurance for certain groups is higher than others. Young people in particular usually need to pay higher premiums than older, more experienced drivers.
That’s because they’re statistically more likely to have an accident and make a claim than someone who’s been driving for 20 years.
So if you’re going to add a named driver to your car insurance, try to avoid young, inexperienced drivers as they could cost you a lot more than you were expecting.
